The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index (UMCSI) is a monthly measure of consumer confidence, derived from a nationally representative survey of at least 600 U.S. households (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). It is normalized to a value of 100 in the first quarter of 1966 and is based on responses to 50 core questions conducted via telephone.
The UMCSI is designed to forecast changes in the national economy by gauging consumer optimism, economic expectations, and spending behaviors. This survey has proven to be a reliable tool for understanding economic trends and cycles. The survey covers three broad areas: personal finances, business conditions, and buying conditions, including specific expectations about inflation, unemployment, and interest rates.
